Menthol — the main active compound in peppermint oil — activates the TRPM8 cold receptors in the skin and mucous membranes. This is not a metaphor: your body literally registers coolness, even though the temperature hasn't changed. The result? In Ayurveda it is known as Pudina and counted among the tridoshic oils, meaning it balances all three doshas, though it acts most strongly on Pitta and Kapha. It cools excess Pitta — the kind of “overheating” that shows up as irritability, headaches and excessive body heat. At the same time, it breaks through Kapha stagnation — heaviness, sluggishness and difficulty concentrating. Ayurvedic physicians used Pudina for headaches and digestive complaints, and as a refresher on hot days — a tradition confirmed by modern research.

A study from Kiel University found that menthol applied to the temples reduces tension headaches as effectively as paracetamol. No side effects. No pills.

Carrier oil for Pitta: coconut or sunflower. For Kapha: almond or sesame.

How to use?

Headache — topical application
2–3 drops diluted in a teaspoon of carrier oil (almond or coconut). Gently rub into the temples, forehead and back of the neck. Avoid the eye area — menthol strongly irritates mucous membranes. This is the best-documented use of peppermint.

Diffuser / focus and energy
3–4 drops into the water. Ideal for work that requires focus, for studying or for an afternoon energy slump. A classic blend for productivity: peppermint + rosemary (2+3 drops).

Steam inhalation — sinuses and colds
2–3 drops into a bowl of hot water. Head under a towel, eyes closed — inhale the steam for 5–8 minutes. Together with eucalyptus (2 drops of each), it makes one of the most effective natural duos for a stuffy nose.

Cooling muscle massage
8–10 drops per 25 ml of carrier oil. Rub into tense muscles, sore joints or your feet after a long day. A cooling and anti-inflammatory effect at the same time.

Shower / quick inhalation
2 drops on your palms, rub them together and inhale deeply — a way to wake up instantly and open the airways.

FAQ

Does peppermint really help with headaches?
Yes — this is one of the better-researched uses of aromatherapy. Menthol diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the temples works by activating cold receptors, relaxing the muscles and improving local circulation. It is most effective for tension headaches.

Can peppermint be applied directly to the skin?
No — like any essential oil, it needs to be diluted. Undiluted menthol can cause severe irritation and even chemical burns. Be especially careful around the eyes, nose and mucous membranes.

Is peppermint suitable for the evening?
Not really — it is a strongly stimulating oil. Used in the evening, it may make it harder to fall asleep. The exception: local application for a headache, where it has a pain-relieving effect without stimulating the whole body.

What is the difference between peppermint and eucalyptus for colds?
Eucalyptus has a deeper mucolytic action — it thins mucus. Peppermint works faster and more superficially — it opens up the sinuses and brings immediate relief when you feel congested. Together they work synergistically — a classic duo for colds.
