Kapha is one of the three basic biological energies (doshas) in Ayurveda. It is created from the combination of two elements: earth and water. It is responsible for the structure and stability of the body, immunity, tissue hydration, joint lubrication and a calm, stable mind.
Kapha provides structure, protection, and peace. It is a dosha that builds and sustains – literally and figuratively. When balanced, we feel strong, grounded, and secure. When in excess, we feel stagnant, lethargic, and attached to the familiar.
Elements: earth + water
Main properties (gunas): heavy, cold, oily, slow, sticky, stable, soft
Body location: chest, lungs, stomach, head, joints, adipose tissue
Main function: building and moisturizing (avalambaka kapha – supports structure and immunity)
People with a dominant Kapha dosha (prakriti Kapha) are usually calm, grounded, caring, and loyal. They tend to build lasting relationships, value routine, and are exceptionally resilient—both physically and emotionally.
