A rich source of plant protein
Split Chickpeas (Chana Dal)
Split Chickpeas (Chana Dal)
are a traditional ingredient in Indian and Ayurvedic cooking. They are made by hulling and splitting chickpeas, so they cook faster than whole chickpeas and are easier to digest. They have a mildly nutty flavor and a creamy texture once cooked.
In Ayurveda, chana dal is especially valued as a strengthening, grounding and nourishing ingredient, particularly when properly spiced (cumin, ginger, coriander, hing). It is best suited to a Pitta or Kapha diet, and when prepared properly it may also be well tolerated by Vata.
Split chickpeas (chana dal):
-
provide protein, fiber and minerals,
-
support a feeling of fullness and steady energy levels,
-
are ideal for classic dishes such as dal, thick soups and vegetable curries, as well as for making chickpea flour (besan).
Tip: soak chana dal for a few hours, then cook it with digestive spices and a little ghee – your agni will thank you.
