Sattva Ayurveda Aromatherapy
Clove Essential Oil 10 ml
It tastes pungent. Yet according to Ayurveda, it is cooling. And that is only the first of clove’s paradoxes.
Clove breaks the rules. In Ayurveda, a pungent, burning taste usually means a hot nature — but Lavanga (clove) has a cooling potency (sheeta veerya). It warms on the outside and cools on the inside. It stimulates digestion, yet calms stomach inflammation. This is one of the reasons why the Charaka Samhita lists it as an ingredient with an exceptionally wide range of uses — in almost every type of Kapha and Vata imbalance.
But the paradox ends with the taste. In action, clove is direct and indisputable: eugenol, which makes up as much as 75–90% of the oil, is one of the best-researched natural bioactive compounds in the history of pharmacognosy. A clinical study published in the Journal of Dentistry (Alqareer et al., 2006) showed that topically applied eugenol numbs toothache as effectively as benzocaine — a synthetic anesthetic used in dentistry. Laboratory studies confirm eugenol’s broad antimicrobial spectrum: it inhibits the growth of Candida albicans, Helicobacter pylori, Staphylococcus aureus and many other pathogens.
Clove reached Europe through the spice trade — in 15th-century Europe, a single handful of cloves cost as much as the same weight in gold. Today it is one of the most affordable and most potent oils in this line. And, like cinnamon, it should be used with respect.
