Sattva Ayurveda Aromatherapy
Valerian Essential Oil 10 ml
The only oil that doesn't calm you down — it lets you switch off.
Valerian is not a gentle oil for evening relaxation. It is the strongest natural sedative in aromatherapy — with a documented effect on the nervous system. Its active compounds — valeric acid and valepotriates — support the production of GABA, the brain's main inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is the same mechanism that sleeping pills act on. Except here there are no synthetic chemicals, no dependence and no morning grogginess.
In Ayurveda, it is known as Tagara — already mentioned in the Charaka Samhita, one of the oldest texts of Ayurvedic medicine, as a herb with Nidrajanana (sleep-inducing) and Vatahara (Vata-balancing) properties. In Ayurveda, excess Vata is exactly this: evening restlessness, racing thoughts, being unable to switch off your mind even though your body is tired. Valerian addresses precisely this state.
The scent is not an obvious one — earthy, deep, with a warm woody note. Not everyone likes it the first time. But it is one of those oils people come back to — because it works.
Scent profile
| Main notes | earthy, rooty, deep |
| Base note | warm, woody, slightly musky |
| Intensity | high — a few drops are enough |
| Character | grounding, heavy, for nighttime |
| Pairs well with | lavender, sandalwood, vetiver, cedarwood, patchouli |
Ayurvedic context — Dosha
| Vata ↓↓ | the key oil for Vata — reduces evening restlessness, racing thoughts and sleeplessness from an “overheated mind” |
| Kapha ↓ | supports Kapha balance — helps with heaviness and daytime drowsiness combined with sleeplessness at night |
| Pitta → | neutral — when Pitta dominates, sandalwood or lavender is a better choice |
Carrier oil for Vata: sesame or almond. Best used warm (warmed in your hands).
