Vetiver doesn't work like most calming oils. It isn't fresh, it isn't floral, it isn't delicate. It is earthy, deep and dense — like the smell of wet soil after rain, with a warm woody-smoky note in the background. And that is exactly why it does something other oils can't: it doesn't just calm the mind, it literally brings you back in touch with your body.

Research confirms what Ayurveda has known for centuries: inhaling vetiver oil significantly reduces spontaneous activity of the brain and nervous system — physiologically switching off “fight or flight” mode. Not by suppressing it, but by restoring balance. In Ayurveda, it is known as Ushira — for centuries, vetiver roots were woven into mats and hung in the windows of Indian homes to cool the air during scorching summers and bring calm to the space. In traditional perfumery, it is called the “Oil of Tranquility” — and it forms the base notes of dozens of luxury perfumes.

It balances Vata and Pitta at the same time — a rare quality. For those who need not lightness, but rootedness.

How to use?

Diffuser / evening wind-down
2–3 drops in water — the oil is thick and intense. A classic blend for deep stress and nervous exhaustion: vetiver + lavender (2+3 drops). For meditation and focus: vetiver + frankincense (2+2 drops).

Massage
8–10 drops in 25 ml of carrier oil (sesame or coconut). Because the oil is thick, mix thoroughly before applying. Ideal for massaging the feet, calves and lower back — classic places where tension is “stored” when Vata is in excess.

Bath
Mix 3–4 drops with a tablespoon of carrier oil and pour into warm water. A vetiver bath before bed is one of the Ayurvedic rituals for chronic stress and exhaustion — it relaxes the muscles and calms the nervous system at the same time.

As a perfume
Vetiver is a classic base note in perfumery — diluted in carrier oil (1–2 drops per 10 ml), it gives a deep, long-lasting scent. It stays on the skin exceptionally long — even for several hours.

How is vetiver different from patchouli?
Both oils are earthy and grounding, but vetiver is drier, woodier and cooler, while patchouli is sweeter and “heavier”. Vetiver has a stronger effect on the nervous system; patchouli acts more on mood and sensuality.

Is vetiver suitable for people with ADHD or difficulty concentrating?
Yes — it is one of the oils that appear in studies on improving focus and reducing overactivity of the nervous system. Used in a diffuser while you work or study, it may support concentration without causing drowsiness.

Why is vetiver oil so thick?
It is obtained from the roots, which contain more resins and sesquiterpenes than leaves or flowers. These very compounds give the scent its depth and the oil its thick consistency. Before use, it’s a good idea to warm the bottle gently in your hands.

Can vetiver be used every day?
In a diffuser — yes. When applying it to the skin, we recommend taking a break every few days, especially with long-term use — the oil is very strong and its active compounds stay in the body for a long time.
