Sattva Ayurveda Aromatherapy
Wintergreen Essential Oil 10 ml
Aromatherapists call it “nature's aspirin.” Not without reason.
Wintergreen contains up to 99% methyl salicylate — a compound chemically similar to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). This is not a metaphor. The same mechanism of action: inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes, reduction of prostaglandins, anti-inflammatory and analgesic action. The difference? Applied topically, methyl salicylate penetrates through the skin directly into the tissues — it bypasses the digestive system and works exactly where it hurts.
In Ayurveda, it is known as Gandapura — Gaultheria fragrantissima, the Himalayan relative of American wintergreen, grew wild on the high mountain slopes of India and was used by local communities for joint pain, rheumatism and muscle tension. Himalayan tradition describes older women crushing fresh leaves, warming them in mustard oil and rubbing them into aching joints — a simple, effective method confirmed today by phytochemistry. In the dosha system, it balances Vata and Kapha — it cools the inflammation typical of excess Pitta and at the same time breaks through Kapha stagnation in the tissues.
It is one of three oils in the line (along with cinnamon and clove) that call for particular caution when applied to the skin. But used correctly — it is one of the most effective.
