A curly hair mask that starts with three butters

The tighter the curl, the harder it is for sebum to travel from the scalp to the ends. 3A–3C curls and 4A–4C coils are the driest of all hair types — and they’re the quickest to show it, with frizz, roughness and a curl pattern that falls apart with every change in the weather.

A light conditioner with a drop of oil isn’t enough for that. In this mask, butters lead the formula: shea butter, coconut oil and cocoa butter sit at the very top of the INCI list. This is nourishment you can still feel several days after washing.

What’s at work in the formula

Shea butter smooths and seals the cuticle. Cocoa butter coats the strand and gives your curls shine. Coconut oil nourishes the hair deep down. Argan oil, avocado oil and olive oil add elasticity. Coconut water and coconut extract hydrate, and lactic acid lowers the pH so the cuticle lies smooth — hence better curl definition.

Protein-free — on purpose

The mask is built on emollients and humectants, with no proteins. That means you can use it as often as every wash, and if your hair is protein-sensitive, it can replace your conditioner for good.

After the mask, apply the curl activator and the curl-defining gel. Wash your hair with the moisturizing shampoo for curly hair, which won’t strip away what the mask gives back.

Curls and coils 3A–4C — very curly, dry, high-porosity hair, including afro-textured hair.

Have 2A–2C waves? You can use it too, once every 1–2 weeks, but apply less and rinse well so it doesn’t weigh down your curl pattern.

• Coconut oil (Cocos Nucifera Oil) — nourishes and softens the strand.
• Cocoa butter (Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter) — coats the hair, adds shine.
• Argan oil (Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil) — elasticity and smoothness.
• Avocado oil and olive oil (Persea Gratissima Oil, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil) — nourishment for dry ends.
• Coconut water (Cocos Nucifera Liquid Endosperm) and coconut extract — hydration.
• Lactic acid (Lactic Acid) — lowers the pH, smooths the cuticle, improves curl definition.

1. After washing, squeeze the water out of your hair and apply the mask from mid-lengths to ends, section by section.
2. Comb through with your fingers or a wide-tooth brush, coating every curl.
3. Leave on under a cap or towel for 10–20 minutes. Heat (a thermal cap, steam from the shower) helps it work faster — especially for low-porosity hair.
4. Rinse while squeezing your hair from the ends upward.
5. Use once a week or instead of conditioner if your curls are very dry.
