Sweet, spicy and deeply warming — cinnamon is a scent that has accompanied teas, rituals and medicine in India for over 4000 years. Steam-distilled from the bark of the Cinnamomum verum tree and known in Ayurveda as Twak or Dalchini, it is a classic warming oil for Vata and Kapha. One of the strongest natural antimicrobials in this line — but also one of those that call for particular care when used.

Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices in human history — mentioned in Egyptian papyri, in Chinese medical texts dating back 4700 years, in the Bible and in Sanskrit Ayurvedic texts. The Phoenicians controlled the cinnamon trade for centuries, keeping its origin a secret — because knowing the source meant holding power. When European explorers set out in the 15th century to find a route to India, one of the main reasons was precisely the wish to reach the sources of cinnamon without going through Arab middlemen.

Today we know why it was so prized. Cinnamaldehyde — the main active compound, making up as much as 60–80% of the oil — is one of the most potent natural antimicrobial compounds known in phytochemistry. It inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, including resistant strains of Candida albicans. It also supports the insulin sensitivity of cells — a mechanism confirmed in clinical studies on blood sugar regulation. In Ayurveda, it is known as Twak or Dalchini — a classic oil for Vata and Kapha that kindles Agni (the digestive fire) and clears Ama (toxins) from the body.

An important note: cinnamon is one of the oils that call for the most respect in use. Cinnamaldehyde is a strong skin irritant — undiluted, it can cause serious skin irritation or burns. Properly diluted, it is one of the most valuable oils in the line.

How to use?

Diffuser / immunity and atmosphere
2–3 drops in water — the oil is very intense. A classic autumn–winter blend for immunity and a warm atmosphere: cinnamon + orange + clove (1+3+1 drops). For energy and warmth: cinnamon + cardamom (2+2 drops).

Massage / circulation and warming
A maximum of 3–4 drops per 25 ml of carrier oil (1% concentration) — no more. Use only on large muscle areas — back, legs, shoulders. Never on the face, neck, eye area or mucous membranes. Ideal for cold extremities and a feeling of stagnation.

Warming bath
A maximum of 2–3 drops mixed with a generous amount of carrier oil (2–3 tablespoons) before adding to the water. Cinnamon in the bath needs careful dilution — if it is not diluted enough, it may irritate sensitive skin.

Natural cleaning and freshening products
5–8 drops in 100 ml of water with a splash of pure alcohol as a natural antibacterial spray for kitchen surfaces. Cinnamaldehyde has confirmed antibacterial and antifungal properties.

What is the difference between Ceylon cinnamon and cassia?
They are two different species. Ceylon cinnamon (*Cinnamomum zeylanicum*) — “true cinnamon” — has a milder, sweeter profile and a low coumarin content. Cassia (*Cinnamomum cassia*) is stronger and sharper, and contains much more coumarin — a compound that, with long-term use, may put a strain on the liver. In Ayurveda, Ceylon cinnamon is preferred — as the safer choice for regular use.

Why does cinnamon need to be diluted so much?
Cinnamaldehyde is a strong contact irritant — one of the most common causes of contact allergies to essential oils. When applying it to the skin, never exceed a 1% concentration (3–4 drops per 25 ml of carrier oil). Before first use, do a patch test on a small area of skin.

Is cinnamon safe in a diffuser?
Yes — inhalation from a diffuser is safe as long as you use small amounts (2–3 drops). Do not use it in a small, enclosed room for long periods — the intense scent may irritate the mucous membranes with prolonged exposure.

Does cinnamon help with colds?
Yes — this is one of its classic uses in both Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Cinnamaldehyde inhibits the growth of bacteria and viruses, supports immunity and warms the body at the first signs of infection. It is best used in a diffuser or as an inhalation.

For external use only. IMPORTANT: cinnamon may irritate the skin — use only well diluted (max 1% on the skin). Never apply to the face, neck or mucous membranes. A patch test before first use is mandatory. Do not use during pregnancy. Avoid if you have hypersensitive skin or excess Pitta. Store away from light and heat sources. Keep out of reach of children.
