Sattva Ayurveda Aromatherapy
Camphor Essential Oil 10 ml
In Hindu temples it burns as a ritual fire. In home medicine cabinets — as pain relief. For thousands of years.
Camphor is one of the few ingredients with a place in both the sacred and the medical sphere at once — and it is irreplaceable in both. In Ayurveda it is known as Karpura — mentioned in the Charaka Samhita as an ingredient of space-cleansing rituals (dhoopana) and of remedies for respiratory, muscular and nervous complaints. In Hindu ritual tradition it is burned during puja as a symbol of purity and of the deity’s presence — its smoke carries intentions upward, and its scent clears the space of negative energies. The same substance, two completely different contexts — and both traditions are right about its properties.
The mechanism of action is well understood: camphor stimulates the TRPV1 and TRPM8 sensory nerve endings — the same receptors that respond to heat and cold. That is why, after applying it, you feel cooling and warming at the same time — it is not a contradiction, it is biochemistry. The practical effect: reduced perception of pain and improved local circulation. In Ayurveda it is classified as sheeta veerya — cooling — even though it warms the tissues externally. It balances Kapha and gently stimulates Vata.
An important note: camphor is one of the oils that call for particular caution. It is potent — and overuse can cause serious side effects. Use as directed.
