Spicy, warm, sweet and fresh with a eucalyptol note — cardamom is the scent that has accompanied teas, rituals and conversations in India for over 4000 years. Obtained by steam distillation from the seeds of Elettaria cardamomum, it is known in Ayurveda as Ela — one of the few tridoshic plants, balancing all three doshas. It stimulates digestion, clears the mind and boosts energy without overstimulating.

Cardamom doesn’t need marketing — its history speaks for itself. The ancient Greeks and Romans imported it from India as a luxury good. Arabs added it to coffee to “open the mind to conversation.” In Scandinavia, it became a key ingredient in baked goods and glögg. In India, it has been an essential part of masala chai, paan and Ayurvedic medicinal blends for more than 4000 years. No other spice has such a wide geographic reach and such a long history of medicinal use.

In Ayurveda, it is known as Ela or Truti — listed in the Charaka Samhita as one of the key ingredients supporting Agni, the digestive fire. The karmas (actions) of cardamom are: kindling digestion, removing excess Kapha from the stomach and lungs, neutralizing Ama (toxins) and clearing the mind. Its main active compounds — 1,8-cineole and linalool — have confirmed antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and respiratory-supporting properties. It is one of the few Ayurvedic ingredients that balance all three doshas at once — tridoshic by nature, though it acts most strongly on Kapha and Vata.

In aromatherapy, the scent of cardamom does something rare: it warms and refreshes at the same time. It is spicy and warm, but with a eucalyptus-like, slightly cool note. It energizes without overstimulating — ideal for a morning diffuser instead of coffee.

How to use?

Diffuser / morning and concentration
3–4 drops in water. One of the best oils for morning energy without overstimulation. A classic Ayurvedic blend for mental clarity and focus: cardamom + frankincense (2+3 drops). For a warm, spicy atmosphere in autumn and winter: cardamom + cinnamon + orange (2+1+2 drops).

Abdominal massage / digestion
6–8 drops per 25 ml of carrier oil (sesame — the classic Ayurvedic choice). Gently massage into the abdomen in clockwise circular motions after a meal or when you have digestive discomfort. A traditional Ayurvedic use for bloating, indigestion and a feeling of heaviness after eating.

Inhalation / respiratory system
3–4 drops in a bowl of hot water. Head under a towel, eyes closed — inhale the steam for 5–8 minutes. Traditionally used for coughs, a feeling of heaviness in the chest and as an expectorant — it helps thin and clear mucus from the airways.

Warming bath
Mix 5–6 drops with a tablespoon of carrier oil and pour into warm water. Especially recommended in autumn and winter — cardamom warms from within and supports the body's natural immunity.

As a perfume
1–2 drops diluted in a carrier oil (jojoba or almond) on the wrist or behind the ears. Cardamom is a classic middle note in oriental perfumes — warm, complex and exceptionally long-lasting on the skin.

Does cardamom oil help with digestive issues?
Yes — this is one of its best-documented uses, both in the Ayurvedic tradition and in more recent phytochemical research. 1,8-cineole and linalool have an antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, reducing bloating and cramps. A belly massage with cardamom oil is a simple, effective home ritual for digestive discomfort.

What is the difference between green and black cardamom?
The Sattva oil comes from green cardamom (*Elettaria cardamomum*) — milder, sweeter and more aromatic. Black cardamom (*Amomum subulatum*) has a completely different profile — smokier, less sweet, and with different therapeutic properties. In aromatherapy and Ayurvedic aromatherapy, green cardamom is used almost exclusively.

Is cardamom suitable for use during pregnancy?
In small culinary amounts — yes. The essential oil in higher concentrations — with caution and after consulting your doctor. The Ayurvedic tradition recommends avoiding large amounts of cardamom during pregnancy.

What does cardamom pair best with in a diffuser?
With frankincense and sandalwood for meditation and focus. With orange and cinnamon for a warm winter atmosphere. With ginger to support digestion and warm you up. Cardamom is one of the most "sociable" spice oils — it blends with almost all the oils in this group.
