Sattva Ayurveda Aromatherapy
Patchouli Essential Oil 10 ml
In the 19th century, European ladies paid a fortune for cashmere shawls from India. They didn’t know they were buying patchouli.
Indian weavers packed dried patchouli leaves between the cashmere shawls to protect them from moths on the long sea voyage to Europe. When the shawls reached London and Paris, they carried that distinctive, earthy, musky scent with them — and European women soon realized that shawls without the scent of patchouli were simply fakes. That is how Europe’s obsession with this aroma began. In the mid-19th century, patchouli became synonymous with luxury, the exotic and the Orient.
In India itself, patchouli has a much longer history — more than 5000 years of use in Ayurveda, where it is known as Pacculi. It balances Vata and Pitta — grounding emotional instability and cooling excess inner fire. Its main active compound, patchoulol, acts on the GABA system — the nervous system’s natural calming mechanism — which explains the deeply calming effect of this scent. Ayurvedic tradition used it for skin problems, emotional restlessness and as an aphrodisiac — as Sushruta himself wrote in the Sushruta Samhita, one of the oldest medical texts in the world.
The scent of patchouli deepens and matures over time — both in the bottle and on the skin. It is one of the few oils that get better with age.
