Clary sage is not just another relaxing oil. It is one of the few essential oils with a clinically documented effect on women's hormonal balance. Its main active compound — sclareol — shows estrogen-like activity: it mimics the action of estrogens at the receptor level. A clinical study of 22 menopausal women found that inhaling clary sage oil lowered serum cortisol levels to a statistically significant degree while raising levels of 5-HTP — a serotonin precursor. The effect was especially marked in women with depressive symptoms.

In Ayurveda, clary sage is classified as a cooling, harmonizing oil that balances Pitta and Vata. The Himalayan Ayurvedic tradition used it for excess inner fire, emotional tension and disruptions to the rhythm of the female body. Linalyl acetate — the dominant ester in the oil — has an antispasmodic effect on smooth muscle, which explains its effectiveness for menstrual pain. A randomized clinical trial from 2012 found that abdominal massage with an oil blend containing clary sage shortened the duration of menstrual pain.

How to use?

Diffuser / hormonal balance and mood
3–4 drops in water. One of the best oils for mood swings related to the menstrual cycle and menopause. A classic blend for emotional harmony: clary sage + lavender (3+2 drops). For feminine strength and balance: clary sage + geranium (2+3 drops).

Abdominal massage / menstrual pain
6–8 drops in 25 ml of carrier oil (coconut or almond). Gently massage into the abdomen and lower back in circular motions. Use 2–3 days before and during menstruation. Linalyl acetate has an antispasmodic effect on the uterine muscles — a mechanism confirmed by research.

Bath / PMS and menopause
Mix 5–6 drops with a tablespoon of carrier oil and pour into warm water. Soak for 15–20 minutes. A clary sage bath before bed for PMS symptoms or menopausal hot flashes — one of the gentle, natural supportive rituals.

Massage / stress and tension
8–10 drops in 25 ml of carrier oil. Massage the neck, shoulders and décolleté for chronic stress and emotional overload. Paired with frankincense (4+4 drops in 25 ml), it makes one of the deeper Ayurvedic duos for stress and exhaustion.

Direct inhalation
2–3 drops on a tissue. For a sudden anxiety attack, mood swings or intense hot flashes — a quick inhalation brings relief within a few minutes.

How is clary sage different from common sage?
They are two different species with completely different compositions. Common sage (*Salvia officinalis*) contains thujone — a compound that is potentially neurotoxic in larger doses. Clary sage (*Salvia sclarea*) does not contain thujone — it is safer and has a different scent, more reminiscent of muscatel. When buying, always check the Latin name.

Does clary sage help during menopause?
It offers support — especially with mood swings, hot flashes and elevated cortisol. A clinical study in menopausal women showed a statistically significant effect of inhaling the oil on lowering cortisol and raising serotonin. It works as support and as part of a ritual — it does not replace hormone therapy.

Can clary sage be used during pregnancy?
No — it is strongly discouraged during pregnancy. Sclareol shows estrogen-like activity and an antispasmodic effect on the uterine muscles. Using it during pregnancy may pose a risk.

Does clary sage cause drowsiness?
Yes — this is one of its effects when used in the evening. Linalool and linalyl acetate have a sedative effect on the nervous system. Do not use it during the day if you are driving or operating machinery — especially at higher concentrations in an enclosed room.
