Tulsi is not just another herbal oil. It is Vishnupriya — “beloved of Vishnu” — a plant that for more than 3000 years has grown in front of every Hindu temple and beside every traditional home in India. Not as decoration — as protection, remedy and a bridge between everyday life and the sacred. In Ayurveda it holds the title of Rasayana — a life-prolonging herb — and is one of the few ingredients classified at once as an adaptogen, an immunity tonic and a sattvic herb (one that clears the mind and spirit).

Eugenol — the main active compound in Tulsi oil — has confirmed anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immunomodulatory properties. But what sets Tulsi apart from other oils is its adaptogenic action: it helps the body regulate its response to stress of any kind — physical, emotional or environmental. It does not suppress the stress response the way sedatives do — it normalizes it. In Ayurveda it balances Vata and Kapha, warming and invigorating without overstimulating Pitta.

How to use?

Diffuser / morning and meditation
3–4 drops in water. A classic morning oil — it clears the mind and gets you ready for the day. In the Ayurvedic tradition, Tulsi is used before meditation and prayer as a herb that purifies the space and the mind. Blend for immunity and energy: Tulsi + eucalyptus (2+3 drops).

Inhalation / respiratory system
3–4 drops in a bowl of hot water. Put a towel over your head, close your eyes and breathe in the steam for 5–10 minutes. One of the classic Ayurvedic aids for colds, coughs and upper respiratory tract infections. Blend: Tulsi + lemongrass (2+2 drops).

Massage / immunity and energy
8–10 drops per 25 ml of carrier oil (sesame — the classic Ayurvedic choice for Vata and Kapha). Rub into the chest, back and neck at the first signs of a cold or when dealing with chronic fatigue.

Bath / reset after a stressful day
Mix 4–5 drops with a spoonful of carrier oil and pour into warm water. A Tulsi bath is one of Ayurveda's restorative rituals — it warms, cleanses and restores balance after a period of overload.

Morning ritual
Put 2 drops on your palms, rub them together and inhale deeply for a few minutes before you start your day. You will especially appreciate the sattvic effect of Tulsi — clarity of mind and intention — on harder mornings.

How is Tulsi different from ordinary basil?
These are completely different plants — apart from the name, they have little in common. Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi, holy basil) is an Ayurvedic plant with strong adaptogenic, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Ocimum basilicum (culinary basil) is a kitchen herb with a completely different profile of active compounds and no documented adaptogenic properties.

What does it mean that Tulsi is an adaptogen?
An adaptogen is a plant that helps the body regulate its response to stress, whatever the type (physical, emotional, environmental). It does not act as a sedative or a stimulant — it normalizes cortisol levels and supports homeostasis. Tulsi is one of the most thoroughly researched adaptogens in Ayurveda.

Is Tulsi suitable for daily use?
Yes — it is one of the few Ayurvedic herbs recommended for everyday use. As an oil in a diffuser, it is safe for most people. When applying it to the skin, remember to dilute it in a carrier oil.

Does Tulsi help with colds?
